WHAT IS TRUE BHAKTI AND DEVOTIONAL SERVICE?

य इदं परमं गुह्यं मद्भक्तेष्वभिधास्यति |
भक्तिं मयि परां कृत्वा मामेवैष्यत्यसंशयः || १८ ६८ ||
ya idam paramam guhyam
madbhaktesh-vabhidhaa-syati
bhaktim mayi paraam krutvaa
maame-vaishya-tyasam-shayaha
(SBG 18: 68)
The one who expounds this confidential Supreme Knowledge to My devotees, has the greatest form of love for Me and offers to Me the highest form of service. Such a person shall undoubtedly come unto Me. (SBG 18:68)

I have taught you the secret wisdom which is deeper than all that is confidential and profound. Reflect fully on what I have declared to you, and do what you wish to do. (SBG 18:63)

samam sarveshu bhooteshu
tisht-hantam parameshvaram
vinashyatsva-vinashyantam
yah pashyati sa pashyati

The person who truly sees is the one who sees the Supreme Soul or Supreme Bhagavan, existing equally in all beings – the unperishing within the perishing. (SBG 13:27 (13:28))

brahma-sootra-padaish-chaiva

Great sages have sung in various ways the absolute truth about the field and the knower of the field The truth has been stated in Vedic hymns and have been described in the Brahma Sutras through reason and logic with unambiguous evidence. (SBG 13:04 (13.5))

सनातनस्त्वं पुरुषो मतो मे || ११ १८ ||
tvamaksharam paramam vedi-tavyam
tvamasya vishvasya param nidhaanam
tva mavya-yah shaashvata-dharma-goptaa
sanaatana-stvam purusho mato me (SBG 11:18)

evam buddheh param buddhvaa
samsta-bhyaat-maana-maatmanaa
jahi shatrum mahaa-baaho
kaama ruupam duraasadam (SBG 3:43)
Thus, O mighty-armed one, having recognized the immortal SELF as being superior to the intellect and having strengthened yourself by yourSelf, kill the invincible enemy in the form of lust and desire. (SBG 3:43)

Delicious, succulent and agreeable foods that augment life and provide purity, strength, health, happiness of the heart, and satiety, are dear to people with the Sattva Guna. (SBG 17:08)

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः |
दम्भाहंकारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः || १७ ५ ||
ashaastra-vihitam ghoram
tapyante ye tapo janaaha
dambhaahamkaara-samyuktaaha
kaama-raaga-balaan-vitaaha (SBG 17:05)
Those who are impelled by the forces of egotism, hypocrisy, passions and attachments, practise terrible austerities which are not taught in the scriptures. (SBG 17.06)

कर्षयन्तः शरीरस्थं भूतग्राममचेतसः |
मां चैवान्तःशरीरस्थं तान्विद्ध्यासुरनिश्चयान् || १७ ६ ||
karshayantaha shareera-stham
bhoota-graama-machetasaha
maam chaivaantah-shareera-stham
taan-viddhyaasura-nish-chayaan (SBG 17:06)
These senseless men torture not only all the elements in their own bodies, but also Me residing within it. You should know them to be of demoniacal qualities. (SBG 17.05)

गुणेभ्यश्च परं वेत्ति मद्भावं सोऽधिगच्छति || १४ १९ ||
naanyam guNe-bhyaha kartaaram
yadaa drashtaanupashyati
guNebhyash-cha param vaytti
madbhaavam so’dhigacchati (SBG 14:19)
A person who treats the Self as above the Gunas and recognises the Gunas alone as the cause in all actions, reaches My Divine Nature.

न तद्भासयते सूर्यो न शशाङ्को न पावकः |
यद्गत्वा न निवर्तन्ते तद्धाम परमं मम || १५ ६ ||
na tad-bhaa-sayate sooryo
na shashaangko na paavakaha
yad-gatvaa na nivartante
taddhaama paramam mama (SBG 15:06)

Neither does the sun, the moon nor fire shine there, where those who reach do not return to material existence. That is My Supreme Abode. (SBG 15:06)
