Unpredictability, thy name is LIFE

Those who complain about people, things, or situations in their life conveniently overlook the greatest miracle happening to them every moment of their life. The miracle that I am talking about is LIFE. Most people seem to take their life for granted as if they were entitled to it and that life was some kind of ‘constitutional right’ of theirs.

Think about it. Countless natural operations take place within your mind and body without your direct participation or intervention, and they ensure that all your vital systems work in synchronisation thus enabling you to exist as the individual that you are. Any of those operations could stop anytime and instantaneously turn you into a corpse.

With such a dangerous ‘sword of Damocles’ hanging over the heads of people all the time, people complain about losing their job, losses in business, being jilted by someone they loved, because they are not happy with their looks, about someone who is more successful than them, or not being able to get a visa to go to the USA!

In an old post of mine,The Three Vital Truths in one’s Karmic Journey, I said that if you have three priceless gifts, you are richer than most billionaires. I also explained why I felt so.

Here is an excerpt from that post:

I have three questions for people who complain about life not being as per their expectations:

Q 1. Are you alive?

Q2. Are you healthy?

Q3. Do you consider yourself to be of sound mental health?

If you have answered ‘Yes’ to the above questions, you should be considering yourself to be phenomenally rich. It might sound strange, but it is the truth. Has it ever occurred to you that the three gifts you have are priceless, and that even the richest person with all the wealth in the world cannot buy them?

Early this morning, I heard about the tragic crash in Costa Rica, of a private plane in which the founder and owner of a massive chain of fitness centres in Europe, and his family, including two minors, were travelling. It is in one of his gyms, at which I work out.

The man appeared recently in a television documentary film on billionaires of Europe. He was an enterprising and flamboyant man who possessed almost everything he could dream of in the material world.

With all due respect to the deceased persons, and extending my deep condolences to those they have left behind, I would like to urge you all to take a moment and do the following:

Put aside all your problems, worries, fears, dreams, ambitions, passions, fantasies, and all unfulfilled desires and ask yourself:

1. Am I alive?

2. Am I healthy?

3. Am I of sound mental health?

Now, carry on with what you were doing, knowing that you possess three things that even the richest person cannot buy with all his or her wealth.

Go through the following Shloka, and internalise it if you are currently facing challenges in your life.

(Krishna says) O son of Kunti, transitory perceptions such as happiness and sadness arise from the contact of the senses with sense objects. Like the heat and cold in summer and winter, they too come and go. They are temporary, so learn to endure them.

LIFE IS THE GREATEST GIFT – EXPERIENCE IT – RELISH IT – CELEBRATE IT – BE THANKFUL FOR IT, and NEVER TAKE IT FOR GRANTED.

Foods which augment life, purity, strength, health, happiness and contentment, which are delicious, succulent, substantial and agreeable, are dear to people with the Sattva Guna.

The Greek platonist philosopher Plutarch, who lived between 46 and 119 CE said in his essay on flesh-eating:

The human body has no need for foods that come from animals. As Plutarch says in his essay, humans cannot kill an animal with their teeth or nails and eat it raw without altering its original state.

He also said in his essay, “But more than this – not even, after your victims have been killed, will you eat them just as they are from the slaughterhouse. You boil, roast, and altogether metamorphose them by fire and condiments. You entirely alter and disguise the murdered animal by use of ten thousand sweet herbs and spices, that your natural taste may be deceived and be prepared to take the unnatural food.”

That was about meat and you definitely need to think about the fodder that animals are fed, and the steroid hormone drugs that are used on animals to enhance meat and dairy production.

When did you last think of all the production enhancing substances that are used in the dairy and poultry industries?

Have you ever seen animals queing up before abattoirs or bovine animals lining up before dairy farms to offer their meat and milk respectively? What else but absolute cruelty it is to kill an animal that wants to live its full life, or steal the milk that a bovine animal produces for its own babies? Sorry for this cheeky question, and with all respect to women, would you be willing to consume human milk? No? Then why the milk of a female animal? And then you call the cow your mother? Really? Show me where in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita does Krishna ask people to drink milk or offer Him milk. The fact is that humans are the only species that drink mammary milk even in their adulthood. No animal does that. Have you seen bulls or cows drinking milk even if it was their own mother’s?

Patrik Baboumian a famous Iranian-born German-Armenian VEGAN bodybuilder was once asked, “How can you get as strong as an ox without eating any meat?” Patrik’s answer was, “Have you ever seen an ox eating meat?”

Adult humans around the world are typically lactose intolerant, which means they can no longer consume animal milk and certain dairy products without having digestive problems once weaned from breast milk.

My golden advice to you: RESEARCH WELL.

I am no qualified food or health expert and therefore, I shall not be advising anyone anything on this matter, but all I would say is that you research well and be absolutely sure about what you and your family members consume. ‘We follow what the older generations in our family have been doing’ is not sensible excuse or argument.

Vedanta, which is the ultimate stage of Vedic studies is when a seeker realises the All-pervading Nature of the nondual Divine principle, Brahman, Paramartha Tattvam or Krishna, which is the SELF in all living beings. All living beings, no matter how small or big, are equally Divine, and humans surely have no right over other species.

Here is the sixth of the Ishavasya Upanishad, which is a highly essential Upanishad of the Vedanta philosophy:

यस् तु सर्वाणि भूतान्य्
आत्मन्य् एवानुपश्यति ।
सर्वभूतेषु चात्मानं
ततो न विजुगुप्सते ॥ ६ ॥
yastu sarvaani bhuutaan-yaatman-yevaanu pashyati
sarva bhuuteshu chaathmaanan
tato na viju gupsate (IU 06)
He who sees all beings in the Self and the Self in all beings, and by virtue of that wisdom feels no hatred.

There are some films I suggest that everyone watch because they can be real eye-openers. Please find below links to some films that I would strongly recommend.

After having been a pure vegan for ten years, I can say with certitude that my diet and my physical activities have helped me to such an extent that I am simply amazed. I am certainly fitter, stronger, and healthier than I was a decade ago.

By the way, although I teach the Srimad Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads, I do not see any need for me to sport a long beard, wear strange clothes, or speak in a slow and effeminate manner.

samam sarveshu bhooteshu
tisht-hantam parameshvaram

(SBG 13:27)
The person who truly sees is the one who sees the Supreme Soul or Supreme Bhagavan, existing equally in all beings – the unperishing within the perishing.

सर्वभूतात्मभूतात्मा कुर्वन्नपि न लिप्यते || ५ ७ ||
yogayukto vishuddhaatmaa

sarva bhootaatma bhootaatmaa
kurvannapi na lipyate (5:07)
A person, who is devoted to the path of selfless action, has a pure mind or a purified soul, has his body and senses under control, is compassionate to all living beings and sees his Self in them, although engaged in work, is never in bondage.

I am proud to be a Vegan Vedantist, which gives me a wonderful feeling that is simply indescribable. I am extremely careful about what I consume and where I consume. Eating out is something I stopped a long time ago. Never take anything or anyone for granted. Do not forget that the only goal of the health and food industries is to make money. They just do not care about your health. Therefore, study, research, learn and go for plant-based whole foods. Avoid packaged foods as far as possible.

Some useful videos which you may watch for the good of yourself and your loved ones.

Yep. I completed 10 years of being PURE VEGAN.

Go VEGAN, exercise regularly and stay calm.

I wish you great, physical, mental, emotional and Karmic health.

Jai Shri Krishna.

Such a soul is very rare…

Shri Bhagavad Krishna says:

बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते |
वासुदेवः सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः || ७ १९ ||
bahoonaam janma naamante
jnaana-vaan-maam prapadyate
vaasudevah sarvamiti
sa mahaatmaa sudur-labhaha (SBG 7:19)

Therefore, after innumerable births, the one who has perfected his or her wisdom, understanding fully My universal reality, surrenders to Me and such a soul is very rare.

It is true. Ask yourself if you have ever sincerely tried to study, investigate, research, and experience the Supreme Truth? I’m pretty sure you haven’t. It is simply due to the faulty and childish dualistic ‘god’ concept with which most of you have been raised. I, too, was raised that way, but then I was fortunate to have the opportunity to read the Srimad Bhagavad Gita all by myself and was not forced to listen to some ‘baba’ or ‘guru’ who would take one Shloka and go on and on explaining it until my ears fell off.

As a child, I would ask a lot of questions, and would not settle until the person who gave me answers to my questions could completely satisfy me using REASON AND LOGIC.

In July 2014, I created a post specifically for the 7th Chapter – the Gnyaana Vignyana Yoga of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita.

Krishna says in Shloka SBG 7:19 I quoted at the beginning of this post that a person who truly understands Krishna’s All-pervading Universal nature is very rare. I have been noticing this ever since I started this site in February 2014. Thousands and thousands of people have visited this site and have also contacted me, or communicated with me, but to be honest, I must say that there has been merely a handful of people whom I consider to be true seekers and not mere blind believers.

Take the melting points of different metals. The denser a metal, the higher its melting point. Similarly, people who have underdeveloped knowledge based on duality deeply embedded in their genes through multiple generations, find it easier to believe symbolic stories to be true rather than ‘tax’ their brains to undertake ‘Sadhana’, which is to thoroughly research and study.

Remember these three steps followed by a TRUE SEEKER:

  1. VichaaraNa: Questioning (and not blindly believing and obeying!)
  2. Shodhana: Searching and Researching
  3. Anubhava: Experiencing the knowledge gained

I do not pander to people who are looking for their ego to be pampered simply because by doing so, I would only be wasting their time and my time, and in the end, there will surely be no positive result.

Instead, I give them the hard truth, which might be bitter in the beginning but later on, it will turn their life into a much better experience.

Below are the three kinds of pleasures explained by Krishna in the 18th Chapter:

SBG 18:37 That, which first seems like poison but in the end is like nectar, is said to be Sattvic. It is born of one’s pure intellect, which is situated in Self-realisation.

SBG 18:38 The happiness or pleasure which is first like nectar due to the contact of sense organs and sense objects, but in the end is like poison, is said to be Rajasic.

SBG 18:39 The pleasure which shrouds Self-realisation right from the beginning until the end and is derived from sleep, indolence and delusion, is declared to be Tamasic.

I always go for Sattvic pleasure, and I hope that is what you too would go for.

How many of you have bought my latest book ‘Capture the Essence – Srimad Bhagavad Gita’ and taken the courses I offer at Tavamithram’s Udemy Learning Centre?

A particular comment with feedback from someone who completed my ‘An Intro to the Vedas and 10 Upanishads by Tavamithram‘ course truly impressed me. It is a short message, but it showed me the seeker in the person.

Below is the comment and my response to the seeker.

Anyone who wishes to change his or her life would need to etch this statement in their mind: “If I continue to do what I have always done, I will continue to get what I have always got.” There will be no change if you do not change.

At least now, consider making use of the study materials I offer that are so simple to use and learn from, and those that teach you how to apply them in your life.

Evolve and improve your life.

Stay blessed.

Jai Shri Krishna.

Nataraja described by Aldous Huxley

This is not for ritualists or religious people, but for those who can think intellectually and comprehend the deep symbolism and allegory used in ancient Indian philosophy.

Aldous Huxley, who authored books such as Brave New World, The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell, Island, The Perennial Philosophy, The Devils of Loudon, Point Counter Point and Eyes on Gaza, describes the significance and comprehensiveness of the symbol of Nataraja or Dancing Shiva.

Whichever ‘religious’ ‘guru’, ‘baba’ or ‘amma’ spins stories out of the symbolism and metaphor used in Vedic literature and convinces people, especially children, to take them literally, is a social criminal because the acts of such a person actually paralyse the natural intelligence of humans.

‘Devotional films’ add to the misery and plant allegories in the form of reality in the minds of the ignorant and unsuspecting masses.

USE YOUR INTELLIGENCE! There are no such things as blind belief, obedience, confession, and so on in the Vedic Sanatana Dharma as they are in many organised religions!

Be a seeker. Ask questions. Research. Analyse, Study. And EXPERIENCE!

How many times have you heard an Indian ‘guru’ or ‘baba’ explaining the Nataraja statues in a manner as lucid as Aldous Huxley’s? Listen to Aldous Huxley, whom I deeply admire, describe the NATARAJA SYMBOL.

Shame on all the babas, gurus, ammas, akkas, ritualists, and psedo-religious people who contribute towards disfiguring the timeless, rational and scientific Vedic Sanatana Dharma to appear like some kind of cheap dogmatic religion, with macabre ideas such as ‘fear of ‘god”, ‘the punishment of ‘god”, and so on!!

For Indians not even to spend three to four hours reading even a translation of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita – the nectar of all Upanishads, is nothing but laziness or stupidity! How a lot of Indians just love to sit for hours listening to some bearded charlatan talking sheer nonsense just amazes me! Do they not have any intentions of growing up and evolving spiritually?

Trust, Disappointment, and Pain

Definitions of the terms Trust, Pain and Disappointment:

Trust (n): a feeling of confidence in someone that shows you believe they are honest, fair, and reliable

Disappointment (n): the feeling of being unhappy because something that you hoped for or expected did not happen, or because someone or something was not as good as you expected.

Pain (n): – the feeling of great discomfort you have, for example when you have been hurt or when you are ill.

– is the feeling of unhappiness that you have when something unpleasant or upsetting happens.

From the dictionary definitions of the three terms, one can conclude that all three are directly related to the manner one perceives and judges a situation or a person.

When you trust someone, it means that he or she behaves in a way that agrees with your idea or standard of being honest or doing things right.

You are disappointed when someone or something is not as you expect or does not behave in a manner you want them to do, but the intensity of your emotion is not high enough to actually cause you pain.

You suffer mental pain and unhappiness when someone or something does something that is not at all as you expect, and the person suddenly changes how they behave or interact with you.

When you carefully analyse the above definitions and explanations of the three terms, you will realise that all three emotions are directly proportionate to what you consider to be right.

Ramesh trusts his friend Ajay and confides in him about everything in his personal life. Sometime later, Ajay finds a new wealthy friend, and he turns his friendship and loyalty towards that new friend. This DISAPPOINTS Ramesh. But when Ramesh notices that Ajay has stopped talking to him, and comes to know that Ajay has revealed to his new friend some extremely confidential information about him, he experiences shock and mental PAIN because of being let down by someone he trusted so much.

We can conclude from the above example that the PAIN Ramesh suffers begins with the TRUST he placed in Ajay. Therefore, logically speaking, the prime cause of Ramesh’s PAIN is the TRUST he placed in Ajay.

When you suffer heartbreaks, instead of blaming the person who broke your heart, or let you down, try to understand that it was your poor judgement of someone’s trustworthiness that led you to disappointment and to mental pain.

The simplest relief from such PAIN, which, in truth, is SELF-INFLICTED, would be to own up to your mistake, learn from the experience, and be more careful next time.

You can avoid encountering such painful situations in the future by keeping the key to your happiness with you always and never giving it to anyone – ever.

Study the Srimad Bhagavad Gita and strive to gain Atmajnana, or the Knowledge of the SELF. Once you’ve mastered your mind, the day when you laugh at situations you now call sad is just around the corner.

All the expectations that you have from others are nothing but the result of your desire to keep your pseudo-self or false ego puffed up, pampered, and fully satisfied. If you truly loved someone, you would not expect them to behave with you in a certain way that merely satisfies your pride or manages some kind of complex that you might have, but you would only wish them well and let them be happy just as you wish to be happy all the time.

The more you trust a person, which means the more you expect them to be in a certain manner that you deem right, and satisfy your pride, ego or whatever you might want to call the pseudo-self of yours, the heavier will your pain be when you find yourself in a situation in which, you think, the other person has let you down.

Remember: The first thing you should do, regardless of how unpleasant the situation might be, is to COME TO TERMS WITH IT, AT LEAST TEMPORARILY. If you do that, your intellect will be able to triumph over the emotions that have numbed your brain, and you will be able to find peace with yourself and focus on what matters to you now and in the future rather than wasting your time on someone or something that is nothing more than a learning experience for you.

Nothing or No one is worth wasting your NOW for.

Don’t worry, be happy.

Stay blessed.

Jai Shri Krishna
